Have you just entrusted — or are you considering entrusting — your chalet or apartment in Torgon to seasonal rental? The tourist tax is often the least understood administrative obligation for new property owners, and yet one of the most important to comply with.

How the tourist tax works in Valais

In Valais, the tourist tax generally consists of two components: a tourism tax and an accommodation tax, calculated per person and per night. The exact amount, accommodation categories and any exemptions (young children in particular) are set by each municipality in its own regulations.

Torgon is a village of the municipality of Vionnaz, which has its own regulation on tourist and accommodation taxes. To find out the exact rate applicable to your property, the reference source remains the Vionnaz municipal administration.

Key point: each Valais municipality sets its own tourist tax rates. Contact the municipality of Vionnaz directly to obtain the current regulation and the exact amount applicable to your property.

Why Valais is different from the canton of Vaud

This is the point most owners discover too late: unlike the canton of Vaud, which has signed an agreement with Airbnb allowing automatic collection of the tourist tax directly on the platform, the canton of Valais has not wanted such an agreement. In practice, this means that for a property rented in Torgon, the tourist tax is not automatically deducted by Airbnb: it is up to the owner — or their representative — to collect it from each guest and remit it to the municipality.

What this means for you in practice

Skipping this step is not without risk: beyond the legal aspect, a late regularization can prove more cumbersome than careful tracking from the start.

How Conciergerie Torgon handles this obligation for you

This is precisely why we built our Sérénité Plan to address this Valais-specific constraint: it includes collecting the tourist tax from guests, preparing the paperwork and declaring it to the municipality of Vionnaz. Under the Essentielle Plan, this task remains the owner's responsibility.

In both cases, we recommend checking the current municipal regulation or consulting a tax advisor for any question specific to your situation.
